Tuning Slide Inserts

Tuning Slide Gap

Tuning Slide Inserts (TSI) improve air flow by minimizing turbulence caused by tuning slide gap. Tuning slide gap is usually a 0.049" diameter variance in standard Bach trumpets. To better understand tuning slide gap, imagine pushing your tuning slide all the way in. The air flow through the leadpipe and tuning slide is uninterrupted. When the tuning slide is pulled out, the air flows through a larger diameter tube (the outer tuning slide tube) and is then forced into a smaller tube (tuning slide). This gap creates turbulence in the airstream, which increases resistance in all registers. By adding our Tuning Slide Inserts, this gap can be nearly eliminated improving intonation, slotting and air flow.

Tuning Slide Inserts are sold in sets of 6 tubes, 3 sizes for both the top and bottom tuning slide outer tubes. TSI are recommended for all players requiring a more open blow in the mid and upper registers. By experimenting with the various inserts, players can custom configure the tuning slide gap to meet their playing requirements. Generally speaking, more gap will increase slotting and less gap will increase flexibility. Keep in mind that you will need some small amount of gap available for proper tuning in various environments.

TSI may be easily removed with a standard cleaning snake or you may order a TSI remover for a minimal charge. Cleaning your trumpet and greasing TSI tubes is highly recommended.
